Robert Jay Armstrong was born on September 5, 1923, in Connellsville, Fayette County, Pennsylvania. He was the son of Jay Chester Armstrong and Louise Anna (Pinard) Armstrong.

Robert served as a Private in Company C of the 314th U.S. Infantry Regiment, 79th Infantry Division during World War II. He was Killed in Action on August 20, 1944, during the liberation of Vexin in France, and he is now buried in the Gettysburg National Cemetery, Gettysburg, Adams County, Pennsylvania, USA.
