Homer Elwood Kirkland was born on March 10, 1918. He was the son of Charlie Johnson Kirkland and Bessie Caroline Hooker Kirkland.

Homer served in the 117th Infantry Regiment, 30th Infantry Division, as a Private First Class during World War II. He was Killed in Action on August 28, 1944, at the age of 26, during the liberation of Vexin, France. PFC Kirkland is now buried in the Mount Zion Baptist Church Cemetery, Loudon, Loudon County, Tennessee, USA.
