On January 5, 1944, his crew took at Bury St. Edmunds airfield on a mission to bomb the Bordeaux-Mérignac aerodrome. At around 1:30 PM, his plane was shot down by enemy fighters. All members aboard were able to bail out and survived except for Sergeant Thompson, who was killed after bailing out. Sgt Thompson is now buried in the Normandy American Cemetery, Colleville-Sur-Mer, France.
