Sam B. Dale, Jr. was born on November 26, 1918. He was the son of Sam Bond Dale and Allie May Jones Dale.
Sam, Jr. served as Second Lieutenant in the 63rd Fighter Squadron, 56th Fighter Group, and Pilot on the P-47D #42-75859 during World War II. On July 4, 1944, he took off from Station 150 in Boxted, England, for a mission to Conches airfield in France. At 6:10 PM, he was shot down in aerial combat. His body fell at Le Mesnil-Fuguet while his plane crashed at Tourneville.
2Lt Dale's body was initially buried in the town cemetery. He was then moved to Saint-André-de-l'Eure, before being permanently transferred to the Normandy American Cemetery, Colleville-Sur-Mer, France. He also has a cenotaph in the Woodlawn Cemetery in Mississippi.
