William C. Ward served in the 17th Troop Carrier Squadron, 64th Troop Carrier Group, as a Second Lieutenant and Co-Pilot on the C-47 #42-92700 during World War II. On November 1, 1944, on a medical evacuation mission, they were trying to reach Montélimar from Luxeuil and then to a hospital in Naples, Italy. On board are five crew members, nine American wounded soldiers, and six German wounded prisoners. At around 2:30 PM, the airplane hit the Pilat mountain range and crashed due to poor weather conditions. Unfortunately, there were no survivors.

2Lt Ward is now buried in the Jefferson Barracks National Cemetery, Lemay, St. Louis County, Missouri, USA, in the same grave as Sgt Takara and PFC Romano.
