Howard served in the 17th Troop Carrier Squadron, 64th Troop Carrier Group, as a Corporal and Radio Operator on the C-47 #42-92700 during World War II. On November 1, 1944, on a medical evacuation mission, they were trying to reach Montélimar from Luxeuil and then to a hospital in Naples, Italy.
