Patrick Francis Buffum was born on January 18, 1935, in Harrison County, Iowa. He was the son of Almond Daniel Buffum and Lauretta Agnes McCauley Buffum.

At the time of his death, Patrick was serving in the 420th Air Refueling Squadron and had been in the Air Force for four years. He was one of the crew members and a casualty of the two KB-29 mid-air collision over Normandy, France, on February 2, 1957. Their plane crashed near the village of Morigny, 20 miles from St. Lo. SSgt Buffum is now buried in the Saint Bridgets Cemetery, Magnolia, Harrison County, Iowa, USA.
