James H. McCray was born on August 1, 1925. He was the son of Robert L. McCray and Tabitha Belle Marlow McCray. He was married to Mildred Ruth Musick Jiles

At the time of his death, James was serving in the 420th Air Refueling Squadron. He was one of the crew members and a casualty of the two KB-29 mid-air collision over Normandy, France, on February 2, 1957. Their plane crashed near the village of Morigny, 20 miles from St. Lo. Sgt McCray is now buried in the Antioch Baptist Church Cemetery, Carrollton, Carroll County, Georgia, USA.
