Harold L. McNew was born on January 26, 1923. He was the son of Lester McNew and Hazel Katherine Rottinghaus McNew.

Harold served in the 328th Bomber Squadron, 93rd Bomber Group, Heavy, as a Staff Sergeant and Right Waist Gunner on the B-24 #42-40983 'Bar Fly' during World War II.

On April 1, 1944, his crew took off from Hardwick, England, for a mission to Germany. At 11:52H, on return from their mission, their plane was shot down by flak and enemy fighters between Fresne-les-Reims and Burgundy, France. Unfortunately, none of the crew members survived. The MACR cannot be found, but it is possible that the plane crashed in Belgium.

SSgt McNew is now buried in the Earlham Cemetery, Richmond, Wayne County, Indiana, USA.
