Daniel A. Butler was born on January 7, 1920, in Texas. He resided in Randall County, Texas, and was a member of the Texas National Guard prior to the war. His National Guard unit was called into full-time active Army service on November 25, 1940, prior to the war, from Canyon, Texas. He was noted, at that time, as being employed as an Actor and also as Single, without dependents.

Daniel served in the 409th Bomber Squadron, 93th Bomber Group, Heavy, as a Staff Sergeant and Left Waist Gunner on the B-24 #42-100248 'Bar Fly' during World War II.

On April 1, 1944, his crew took off from Hardwick, England, for a mission to Germany. Between 11:40 AM and 12 noon, on their return from their mission, their plane was shot down by enemy fighters between Fresne-les-Reims and Burgundy, France, and crashed at Reims-Courcy. The incident resulted in the deaths of all crew members except for SSgt Stanley, who was taken as a prisoner.

SSgt Butler is now buried in the Rose Hill Cemetery, Tulia, Swisher County, Texas, USA. His name is commemorated on a monument located in Bourgogne-Fresne, France, but his first name is inscribed as David.
