Edward Matthew Cronin was born on May 16, 1896, in Bayonne, New Jersey. He was the son of Timothy J. Cronin and Mary May Melando Cronin.

Edward served in the 96th Aero Squadron as a First Lieutenant and Pilot during World War I. He was Killed in Action on September 13, 1918, when his airplane was brought down by shell fire as he was returning from a bombing expedition over the German lines. He is now buried in the Meuse-Argonne American Cemetery and Memorial, Romagne-sous-Montfaucon, Departement de la Meuse, Lorraine, France.
