Merril Charles Grey was born on April 30, 1918, in Sunrise, Chisago County, Minnesota. He was the son of Arthur Burdette Grey and Ruth W Warner Grey.

Merril served in the 316th Fighter Squadron, 324th Fighter Group, as a Second Lieutenant and Pilot of the P-47 #42-26539 during World War II. He was Killed in Action during a mission on September 9, 1944, when his aircraft was hit by flak and crashed at Vers Dannemarie - 9 km O Altkirch, France. He is now buried in the Lorraine American Cemetery, Saint-Avold, France. He also has a memorial in Sunrise Cemetery, Minnesota.
