Monument

The memorial consists of a stele flanked by two standing boards containing 3 panels on each board. The memorial is in tribute to all those who fell in the sky of the upper Rhine during the two wars. They were French, Americans, citizens of Commonwealth countries, and some were Air Commandos. The names of the American airmen are in the first panel of the right board. A plaque mounted on the top of the stele is for Lt. Kiffin Y. Rockwell,  one of the first three Americans to volunteer for service in the French Foreign Legion.

Avec 90 jeunes Américains, s'engage dans la Légion Etrangère, dès août 1914, aux côtés des Français. A vécu l'enfer des tranchées avant d'intégrer l'aviation militaire. En compagnie de 6 compatriotes, rejoint l'escadrille N124, créée le 18 avril 1916 et basée à Luxeuil Les Bains.

Kiffin Rockwell est abattu à bord de son Nieuport 17, ici même, 3 jours après son 24ième anniversaire, le 23 septembre 1916.

Ne pouvant être mis en terre là où il tomberait, tout comme il le souhaitait, il fut inhumé au cimetière de Luxeuil les Bains le 25 septembre 1916.11y repose toujours.

Titulaire de la 1ère victoire aérienne, qu'il remporta au-dessus du Hartmannswillerkopf le 18 mai 1916.

Sa devise : La cause de la France est la cause de l'Humanité.

Along with 90 young Americans, he joined the Foreign Legion in August 1914, on the side of the French. He lived through the hell of the trenches before joining military aviation. Along with 6 compatriots, he joined the N124 squadron, created on April 18, 1916, and based in Luxeuil Les Bains.

Kiffin Rockwell was shot down aboard his Nieuport 17, right here, 3 days after his 24th birthday, on September 23rd, 1916.

Unable to be buried where he would fall, as he wished, he was buried in Luxeuil les Bains cemetery on September 25, 1916.

He was the winner of the 1st aerial victory, which he won over the Hartmannswillerkopf on May 18th, 1916.

His motto: The cause of France is the cause of Humanity.

La croix de Svastika est le symbole le plus vieux de l'humanité. Agé de plus de 10 000 ans, c'est un signe de bon augure employé dans toutes les cultures de l'humanité préhistorique. Svastika vient du sanskrit et est synonyme de bonheur, bien-être, bonne fortune. C'est un symbole de la nature, de l'amour, de la fertilité et un signe cosmique représentant le mouvement perpétuel autour d'un point fixe : l'univers et pour les Terriens, le soleil. Apposé sur l'emblème de l'escadrille La Fayette, la tête de Sioux, sur la proposition de Raoul Lufbery, en décembre 1916, la croix devient un symbole de protection et de chance pour les équipages et les avions.

Ce Mémorial a été érigé avec le soutien de La Région Grand Est, la Collectivité européenne d'Alsace, Les Ailes Brisées, la Fédération Maginot, le Souvenir Français, L'UNC, l'ANOPEX, la commune de Roderen, l'association Alsace Ontario.

English translation:

The swastika cross is the oldest symbol of humanity. More than 10,000 years old, it is a sign of good luck used in all cultures of prehistoric humanity. Swastika comes from Sanskrit and is synonymous with happiness, well-being, and good fortune. It is a symbol of nature, love, fertility, and a cosmic sign representing the perpetual movement around a fixed point: the universe and for the earthlings, the sun. Affixed to the emblem of the La Fayette squadron, the Sioux head, on the proposal of Raoul Lufbery, in December 1916, the cross became a symbol of protection and good luck for the crews and the planes.

This Memorial was erected with the support of the Grand Est Region, the European Collectivity of Alsace, Les Ailes Brisées, the Maginot Federation, the Souvenir Français, the UNC, the ANOPEX, the municipality of Roderen, the association Alsace Ontario.
