John Paul Merton of Flushing, New York, was born on November 2, 1918. He was the husband of Margaret May Merton, of Liverpool. He was the brother of Father Thomas Merton, a Trappist monk and best-selling author of an autobiography, "The Seven Storey Mountain", published in 1948.
John served in the #166 Squadron (Tenacity) of the Royal Canadian Air Force as a Sergeant during World War II. He was Killed in Action on April 16, 1943, as a result of a flying accident when his plane (Wellington #HE 862) crashed into the English Channel due to engine failure.
