William Tunstall Flippen Jr. was born on December 6, 1917, in Tobaccoville, Powhatan County, Virginia. He was the son of William Tunstall Flippen Sr. and Veva Audrey Lovins Flippen. He was married to Dorothy Anderson Waddell Leach. He served in Company G, 275th Infantry Regiment, 70th Infantry Division, as a Staff Sergeant during World War II.
SSgt Flippen was Killed in Action on February 7, 1945, during the liberation of Grosbliederstroff, France. He is now buried in the Epinal American Cemetery and Memorial, Epinal, Departement des Vosges, Lorraine, France. He also has a cenotaph in the Hobson's Chapel United Methodist Church Cemetery, Powhatan, Powhatan County, Virginia, USA.
