James F. O'Laughlin was born on January 30, 1924, in Mahoning Township, Armstrong County, Pennsylvania. He was the son of William L. O'Laughlin and Ruby I. Furlong O'Loughlin. He entered the service on June 18, 1940. He served in the 326th Airborne Engineer Battalion, 101st Airborne Division, as a Sergeant during World War II.

During Operation Market Garden in September 1944, the 326th Airborne Engineer Battalion supported Allied advances in the Netherlands by clearing obstacles and maintaining vital roads and bridges. Some engineers arrived by glider under heavy enemy fire, and one glider crash near Son resulted in several fatalities.

Sgt O'Laughlin was Killed in Action on September 20, 1944, and is now buried in the Netherlands American Cemetery and Memorial, Margraten, Eijsden-Margraten Municipality, Limburg, Netherlands.
