Clayton Douglas Curtis was born on November 26, 1920, in Cooperstown, Griggs County, North Dakota. He was the son of Herbert C. Curtis and Lillian V. LaValley Curtis. He entered the Army on June 14, 1942. He completed his basic training at Fort Knox, Kentucky, and served as a medium tank specialist. Sgt Curtis served in the United States Army with the 740th Tank Battalion in World War II. Known as the “Daredevil Tankers”, the 740th was a separate battalion that fought from Utah Beach all the way to the Baltic Sea in support of various divisions of the US war effort.
Sgt Curtis was Killed in Action on January 31, 1945, in Belgium. He is now buried in the Henri-Chapelle American Cemetery and Memorial, Henri-Chapelle, Arrondissement de Verviers, Liège, Belgium.
