Alton Neil “Buster” Fleming was born on December 27, 1922, in Cross Plains, Callahan County, Texas. He was the son of Callie Alexander Fleming and Lora Mabel Crass Fleming. He entered the army in 1943. SSgt Fleming served in the United States Army with the 740th Tank Battalion in World War II. Known as the “Daredevil Tankers”, the 740th was a separate battalion that fought from Utah Beach all the way to the Baltic Sea in support of various divisions of the US war effort.

SSgt Fleming was Killed in Action on April 13, 1945, in Kassel, Germany. He is now buried in the Pioneer Cemetery, Pioneer, Eastland County, Texas, USA.
