Arthur Paul Hartle was born on September 18, 1915, in Bedford County, Pennsylvania. He was the son of Edgar Hassler Hartle and Hattie May McDonald Hartle. He graduated from Pleasantville High School in 1935 and was employed by the Harris & Boyer Baking Company in Cumberland before entering military service in September 1941. He trained at Fort Knox, Kentucky, and was commissioned as a Second Lieutenant in February 1943. He was later promoted to First Lieutenant in January 1944, just weeks before his deployment overseas. 1Lt Hartle served in the United States Army with the 740th Tank Battalion in World War II. Known as the “Daredevil Tankers”, the 740th was a separate battalion that fought from Utah Beach all the way to the Baltic Sea in support of various divisions of the US war effort.

1Lt Hartle was Killed in Action on February 25, 1945, near Cologne, Germany. He is now buried in the Bedford County Memorial Park, Bedford, Bedford County, Pennsylvania, USA.
