Raymond Ellis Johnson was born on October 30, 1913, in New Boston, Bowie County, Texas. He was the son of Bige Ellis Johnson and Mary Lou Raney Johnson. He was married to Ella Katherine "Kitty" Jones Johnson. Cpl Johnson served in the United States Army with the 740th Tank Battalion in World War II. Known as the “Daredevil Tankers”, the 740th was a separate battalion that fought from Utah Beach all the way to the Baltic Sea in support of various divisions of the US war effort.

Cpl Johnson was Killed in Action on March 2, 1945, in Germany. He is now buried in the Henri-Chapelle American Cemetery and Memorial, Henri-Chapelle, Arrondissement de Verviers, Liège, Belgium.
