John R. Mercer was born on January 13, 1921, in Cook County, Illinois. He was married to Annabel L Mercer. T4 Mercer served in the United States Army with the 740th Tank Battalion in World War II. Known as the “Daredevil Tankers”, the 740th was a separate battalion that fought from Utah Beach all the way to the Baltic Sea in support of various divisions of the US war effort.
T4 Mercer was Killed in Action on April 13, 1945. He is now buried in the Camp Butler National Cemetery, Springfield, Sangamon County, Illinois, USA. He also has a cenotaph in the White Rock Cemetery, White Rock, Ogle County, Illinois, USA.
