Ray T. Merritt was born on January 2, 1922, in Caney, Atoka County, Oklahoma. He was married to Anna Faye Withrow Johnson. Cpl Merritt served in the United States Army with the 740th Tank Battalion in World War II. Known as the “Daredevil Tankers”, the 740th was a separate battalion that fought from Utah Beach all the way to the Baltic Sea in support of various divisions of the US war effort.

Cpl Merritt was Killed in Action on February 25, 1945, in Belgium. He is now buried in the Henri-Chapelle American Cemetery and Memorial, Henri-Chapelle, Arrondissement de Verviers, Liège, Belgium. He also has a cenotaph in the High Hill Cemetery, Atoka County, Oklahoma, USA.
