John “JB” Brookie was born on November 5, 1915, in Pickens County, South Carolina. He was the son of John and Mary Jane Green Brucke. He was married to Frances Spearman Brookie. He served in the United States Army with the 740th Tank Battalion in World War II. Known as the “Daredevil Tankers”, the 740th was a separate battalion that fought from Utah Beach all the way to the Baltic Sea in support of various divisions of the US war effort.

SSgt Brookie died on October 12, 2011, and is now buried in the Greenwood Memorial Gardens, Hodges, Greenwood County, South Carolina, USA.
