Derek John Farley was born on May 21, 1986, in Troy, Rensselaer County, New York. He was the son of Kenneth and Carrie Boyce Farley. He graduated from Columbia High School in 2004 and enlisted in the United States Army immediately after graduation, training as an Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) Technician. He served in Iraq from 2006 to 2007 with the 756th Explosive Ordnance Disposal Company, where he was wounded while attempting to disarm an improvised explosive device, resulting in the loss of hearing in one ear. He later deployed to Afghanistan as a team leader with the 702nd Ordnance Company (Explosive Ordnance Disposal), 191st Ordnance Battalion, 21st Theater Sustainment Command, to support Operation Enduring Freedom.

On August 17, 2010, SSgt Farley was killed in action in Bala Boluk, Farah Province, Afghanistan, when an improvised explosive device detonated as he attempted to render it safe. He is now buried in the Gerald B.H. Solomon Saratoga National Cemetery, Saratoga, Saratoga County, New York, USA.
