Joshua Seth Gire was born on September 22, 1982. He was the son of Paul W. Gire and Peggy E. Hunt. He was married to Jacqueline Gire. He graduated from Huntington High School in Chillicothe, Ohio, in 2000. He enlisted in the United States Army in 2001, before the September 11 terrorist attacks, and later reenlisted after completing his initial term of service. During his military career, Gire deployed to Kosovo, Iraq, and Afghanistan twice. At the time of his second deployment to Afghanistan, he was assigned to the 54th Engineer Battalion, 18th Engineer Brigade, based in Bamberg, Germany, to support Operation Enduring Freedom.

On March 22, 2011, SSgt Gire was killed in action in Bandoka, Afghanistan, when enemy forces attacked his unit with an improvised explosive device, rocket-propelled grenades, and small-arms fire. He is now buried in Arlington National Cemetery, Arlington, Arlington County, Virginia, USA.
