Darrion Terrell Hicks was born on December 28, 1990, in Raleigh, Wake County, North Carolina. He was assigned to the 54th Engineer Battalion, 18th Engineer Brigade, 21st Theater Sustainment Command, based in Bamberg, Germany. He was later deployed to Afghanistan to support Operation Enduring Freedom.

On July 19, 2012, Cpl Hicks was killed in action in Ghazni, Afghanistan, after sustaining injuries from an enemy improvised explosive device. He is now buried in the Raleigh National Cemetery, Raleigh, Wake County, North Carolina, USA.
