Bruce Edward Horner was born on March 3, 1964, in Flemington, Hunterdon County, New Jersey. He was married to Erin Horner. He previously worked as an emergency medical technician in Lorain, Ohio, before beginning his military career. He was assigned to the 127th Military Police Company, 709th Military Police Battalion, 18th Military Police Brigade, 21st Theater Support Command, based at Fliegerhorst, Germany. He was later deployed to Iraq to support Operation Iraqi Freedom.

On June 1, 2007, Sgt Horner was killed in action in Seddah, Iraq, after his unit came under enemy small-arms fire while participating in operations to locate three missing soldiers. He is now buried in the Peninsula Memorial Park, Newport News, City of Newport News, Virginia, USA.
