James Roger Ide V was born on December 26, 1977. He was assigned to the 230th Military Police Company, 95th Military Police Battalion, 18th Military Police Brigade, 21st Theater Sustainment Command, based in Sembach, Germany. A military working dog handler, he served with a Belgian Malinois trained to detect explosives. He was later deployed to Afghanistan to support Operation Enduring Freedom.
On August 29, 2010, SSgt Ide was killed in action in Hyderabad, Afghanistan, when insurgents attacked his unit with small-arms fire. In recognition of his service and sacrifice, a military police training range at Fort Leonard Wood, Missouri, was dedicated in his honor. Following the retirement of his military working dog, his family adopted the Belgian Malinois. He is now buried in the Jefferson Barracks National Cemetery, Lemay Township, St. Louis County, Missouri, USA.
