Errol Melvin James was born on June 9, 1979, in Antigua and Barbuda. He was married to Eva James. After graduating from high school, he relocated to St. Croix, U.S. Virgin Islands, where he enlisted in the United States Army in 2000. He deployed to Iraq in March 2003 as a combat medic and to Afghanistan in February 2005 as a trauma specialist. During his second deployment to Afghanistan in support of Operation Enduring Freedom, he was assigned to the 527th Military Police Company, 709th Military Police Battalion, based in Grafenwöhr, Germany.

On August 4, 2008, SSgt James died at Forward Operating Base Torkham, Afghanistan, from injuries sustained in a non-combat-related incident. Currently, we don't have details about his burial location.
