Matthew Michael “Matt” Murchison was born on October 11, 1985, in Hutchinson, Reno County, Kansas. He was the son of Michael Murchison and Deborah Murchison-Perri. He attended schools in the Blue Valley School District before his family relocated to the Olathe, Kansas, area in 1995. He continued his education at Indian Creek Elementary School, Pioneer Trail Middle School, and graduated from Olathe East High School in 2004. In September 2005, Murchison enlisted in the U.S. Army and completed basic training at Fort Leonard Wood, Missouri. He served with the 127th Military Police Company, 720th Military Police Battalion, 89th Military Police Brigade, based in Hanau, Germany, and deployed to Iraq in November 2006, in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom. During the deployment, he served as both a driver and gunner in the Kalsu area.

Spc Murchison was killed on August 4, 2007, in Baghdad, Iraq, when the vehicle he was riding in struck an improvised explosive device. He is now buried in the Fort Leavenworth National Cemetery, Fort Leavenworth, Leavenworth County, Kansas, USA.
