Barun Rai was born on June 5, 1987, in Nepal. He was assigned to the 54th Engineer Battalion, 18th Engineer Brigade, 21st Theater Sustainment Command, Warner Barracks, Bamberg, Germany. He was later deployed to Afghanistan in support of Operation Enduring Freedom.

Rai died on August 3, 2011, at FOB Shank, Afghanistan, of injuries sustained during a vehicle rollover. He is now buried in Arlington National Cemetery, Arlington, Arlington County, Virginia, USA. He was posthumously promoted to Sergeant.
