Born 1856 in Canada. American benefactor from Pasadena, California, who funded the transportation and housing of the armistice rail car in 1927. Was a founding member of the California Institute of Technology. From Find a Grave: usinessman and Philanthropist. Principal benefactor and longtime trustee of the California Institute of Technology in Pasadena, California. Successful as an attorney in Detroit, Michigan, he came to California in 1896 and became wealthy through the lumber business, mining, and real estate. Over time, he was the president of several corporations, including the Madera Sugar Pine Company, the Sugar Pine Lumber Company, the Madera Land Company, the Minarets and Western Railway Company, the St. Anthony Mining Company, the Santa Monica Mountain Park Company, and the Southern California Edison Company, for which he served on the board of directors. In 1921, he bequeathed a major portion of his fortune to Caltech, helping to ensure the financial stability of the institution. Fleming and his daughter Marjorie donated 22 acres of land in Pasadena for the Caltech campus, and provided funding for the first building, Throop Hall. He was named president emeritus of the Caltech board of trustees in 1933. He was also honored in 1927 as a Chevalier of the Legion of Honor in France for his contribution to the Armistice Memorial after the first World War. Husband of Clara H. Fowler, his cremains are interred in the Fowler Crypt at Elmwood Cemetery.
