Richard Brumback Reed was born on September 25, 1891 in Van Wert, Ohio. He was the son of John Perry Reed and Estelle Brumback Reed. He attended Princeton College.He trained first at the Curtiss School of Aviation, Buffalo, NY, afterwards, went to the US School of Aeronautics, Cornell University, from which he was graduated in September 1917. He sailed from New York in September 17th. Spending the remainder of his time in training in England, Reed had finished his course and was about to leave for France, when he met with fatal airplane accident on June 5, 1918. His plane crashed into the sea near Turnberry, Scotland. He is now buried in the Woodland Union Cemetery, Van Wert, Van Wert County, Ohio, USA.

He and three other American Aviators are remembered on Turnberry War Memorial (Turnberry School of Aerial Gunnery and Fighting Memorial) in Scotland.
