2nd Lt Bradford R. Wikholm, pilot of the P-38 Lightning 42-67989, took off from station 131 in Nuthampstead, Hertfordshire, UK to escort bombers to Friedrichshafen. The fighters were attacked over Gottenheim on their return trip. Wikholm’s right engine caught on fire from a direct hit, but he dived and put it out. Heading west and stable at 6000 feet was the last anyone saw of him. He was declared MIA until the locals, who had buried him at the St-Gilles-Eglise cemetery. He was reinterred at the US cemetery at St-Avold before being repatriated to the US.
