SSgt William Harold Moncy, radio operator of the B-24 Liberator 42-40172, took off at 2203 from Harrington, Northamptonshire, UK on a resupply mission to the St-Symphorien-sur-Coise Resistance cell at Duerne. During its drop, a wingtip clipped a tree, sending the plane smashing into the mountainside. Only Sgt Gillikin survived, burnt and wounded, to escape back to the UK.
