Major Henry William Shurlds Jr., pilot of the P-47 Thunderbolt 42-26938, took off from A-14 in Cretteville on an armed reconnaissance over the Seine between Rouen and Paris. He was shot down by a German Me-109 whose hit caused Shurlds’ plane to explode in mid-air.
He also has a cenotaph located in Oak Grove Church Cemetery, Tolarville, Holmes County, Mississippi.
