Richard Houseal Albright Sr. was born on July 24, 1912, in Maytown, York County, Pennsylvania. He was the son of Richard F. Albright and Elsie H. Houseal Albright. He was married to Catherine Albright Zook Cochran. After attending Elizabethtown College, he pursued a career in road and bridge construction, applying his engineering background. He volunteered for military service on July 7, 1943, enlisting in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania. He served as a Staff Sergeant with Company A, 179th Engineer Combat Battalion.

On August 23, 1944, during the Allied advance across the Seine River near Tilly, France, his unit had successfully ferried infantrymen of General George S. Patton's Third Army across the river in assault boats when an enemy artillery shell struck while he was standing beside his truck, killing him in action. He is now buried in the Maytown Union Cemetery, Maytown, Lancaster County, Pennsylvania, USA.
