Robert R. Hoffman entered the military service in New Jersey. He served as a Second Lieutenant and Pilot on P-51B #43-24766, 364th Fighter Squadron, 357th Fighter Group, U.S. Army Air Force during World War II.

Robert died in the "Line of Duty" on February 27, 1945, when his P-51 collided, approx. one mile north of Westleton, England, with P-51B #42-106447 flown by Lt. Ralph E. Eisert, Jr. of the 364th Fighter Squadron, 357th Fighter Group. Both pilots was killed in the collision. 2LT Hoffman is buried now in the Cambridge American Cemetery, Cambridge, United Kingdom.
