357th Fighter Group Roll of Honor
Irving A. Smith was born on April 5, 1921. He served in the 363rd Fighter Squadron, 357th Fighter Group as a Lieutenant during World War II. Lt. Smith was piloting the P-51 #43-6947 on a glide bombing mission against Mayenne, France. He was seen to go missing in the poor conditions over England and France on June 6, 1944. According to his wingman, 2nd Lieutenant Floyd J. Maynard: “…at LE FLECHE at about 2,400 feet we entered the overcast. I lost sight of Lt. SMITH at this point and did not see him or hear him on the radio thereafter. The time we entered the overcast was approximately 1210 hours.” Lt. Smith’s plane crashed in France. His remains were recovered after the war and were sent to the Golden Gate National Cemetery in San Bruno, California. His name is listed on the Leiston Airfield Memorial in England, but his first name is spelled "Irvine".
