Billy E. Phelps was born on January 16, 1922. A crew member on the C-54 #42-72698, which on December 5, 1948, crashed on takeoff. Shortly after a night takeoff from Fassberg AFB, while in initial climb, the four engine aircraft stalled and crashed near the airport. All three crew members who taking part to the Berlin Airlift were killed. CPT Phelps is buried now in the Forest Lawn Memorial Park, Long Beach, Los Angeles County, California, USA.
