Richard Winter was born on September 30, 1924. He served in the 48th Troop Carrier Squadron as a Sergeant during World War II. During the Berlin Airlift, he was a crew member on the C-54 #42-72688 aircraft. On October 18, 1948, the crew was returning to their base in Frankfurt after completing a cargo flight to Berlin. On final approach by night, the four-engine aircraft crashed in unknown circumstances in Neu-Isenburg, about six km east of the airport. All three crew members were killed. SGT Winter is buried now in the Evergreen-Washelli Memorial Park, Seattle, King County, Washington, USA.
