B-17 (44-6573) Crash Memorial- 398th Bomber Group

MonumentA large memorial with a to scale replica of a B-17 tail with numbering of this aircraft.
On March 2, 1945, the B-17 (44-6573) OF THE 603th Bomber Squardron of the 398th Bomber Group, 8th Air Force was lost during a bombing mission over Germany. The aircraft was shot down by enemy fighters near Chemnitz, Germany, and crashed near Slaný, close to Karlovy in what is now the Czech Republic.
The crew included:
Pilot: Don Christensen, Co-pilot: Bill Lone, Navigator: Harry Ostrow, Bombardier: John Gustafson, Flight engineer/top turret gunner: Bob Dudley, Radio Operator: Elmer Gurba, Ball turret gunner: Albt Carlisle, Waist gunner: Ken Plantz (8 Killed in Action); Tail gunner: Selmer Haakensen (Prisoner of War); Missing Air Crew Report 12853.
