Monument
A granite stele commemorating the soldiers of the 35th Infantry Division who lost their lives on August 2, 1944. The monument, inscribed in French, includes the division's insignia along with the names and ranks of the fallen soldiers. The monument tells that these soldiers were Killed in Action on August 2, 1944, but official records show their
death date as August 3.
The 35th Infantry Division, under Major General Paul Baade, advanced toward Pont-Farcy after securing the area around St-Lô. On August 2, 1944, the division engaged in heavy fighting to liberate Pont-Farcy as part of the effort to push the German forces southward toward the Seine River and out of northern France.
This battle marked a turning point in the liberation of France, eventually leading to the liberation of Paris later in the month and signaling the collapse of German forces in the region. The destruction of the bridges over the Vire River by retreating German forces slowed the Allied advance, but U.S. forces, supported by airstrikes and engineering units, were able to continue their push through the region.
