Picauville American Aviators Monument

Monument

An upright stele bearing a rectangular tablet on the front and seven photos of the inscribed men on the back. The tablet is inscribed with a French commemoration message and a list of American airmen who died from June 1944 to September 1944, while based in Picauville. Also inscribed is the depiction of the 9th Air Force insignia. These airmen served in the 509th, 510th, and 511th Fighter Squadron of the 405th Fighter Group, 9th USAAF. The monument was inaugurated in 2006.

 

Picauville airfield was home to the 405th Fighter Group. Declared operational on 26 June 1944, the airfield was designated as "A-8", it was used by the 405th Fighter Group which flew P-47 Thunderbolts until mid-September when the unit moved to St. Dizier, near Nancy. Afterward, the airfield was closed.
