Weißenfels 69th Infantry Division Plaque
Details:
On the exterior wall of the museum.
PlaqueMarble memorial plaque mounted on the north wing of Schloss Neu-Augustusburg recognizes the U.S. 69th Infantry Division, First U.S. Army, which played a central role in taking control of Weissenfels to seize crossing sites on the Saal River during 12-15 April 1945. Schloss Neu-Augustusburg was probably the most contested building in the city of Weißenfels during those four days.
U.S. Brigadier General Mark Hertling, then G3 of United States Army Europe, Fletcher M. Burton, General Consul, U.S. Consulate-General in Leipzig, Manfred Rauner, Weissenfels Mayor, Joseph Lipsius, 69th Infantry Division Veteran, and other U.S. and German officials participated in a ceremony to dedicate the plaque on 13 April 2005, the 60th anniversary of the battle.
Although originally installed on a wall in the entry hallway to the Schloss Neu-Augustusburg west wing, the plaque was moved to an outside wall in 2023.
