Battle for Weißenfels Servicemen Plaque

<< Back to Neu-Augustusburg Castle Museum

Details:

Inside the museum.

Plaque

Marble memorial plaque mounted inside Schloss Neu-Augustusburg lists the names of fifteen U.S. and other German personnel who died during the battle for Weissenfels during 12-15 April 1945. Although most U.S. personnel were assigned or attached to the 69th Infantry Division, First U.S. Army, the listing also includes one soldier from the 2d Infantry Division, also First U.S. Army, who also fell in Weissenfels during the operation. Schloss Neu-Augustusburg was probably the most contested building in the city of Weißenfels during those four days.

Note: The following names were misspelled on the plaque: Wilfried, Roland, Hornig, and Lakford. The correct names are Wilfred, Ronald, Horning, and Lankford.
